1.What is Bafat powder?
Bafat powder is a blend of spices mixed to create an authentic powder that is used by  Mangalorean Catholics traditionally  to prepare meat dishes. It can also be used to fry fish or cook vegetables.
2.What is Bafat powder made of?
Bafat powder is a mixture of dried and ground chilli peppers, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, black peppercorn, turmeric, cinnamon and cloves . It reflects Portuguese and Goan influences.
3.How to store?
Once opened, store the masala powder in an air-tight container. Use as needed and store away from direct sunlight and heat.

How to prepare?

  • 1 kg Meat, with fat
  • 3-4 large onions
  • 2-3 green chilies (adjust to taste)
  • 10-12 cloves garlic
  • 2 inches ginger
  • 2 inches cinnamon or cassia bark
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2-3 tablespoons bafat powder
  • 2-3 teaspoons thick tamarind extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon vinegar
  • salt to taste
Instructions
  • Cut the meat into medium sized pieces (cubes). Ideally every piece of meat should have some fat along with it.
  • Cut the onions into large cubes & finely chop the ginger and garlic. Slit the green chillies into half.
  • Put the meat along with onions, chillies, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, salt, tamarind juice and bafat powder in a vessel, cook till done.
